Getting started

This articles illustrates how to get started with the FOX Board G20.

Requirements

In order to get started with FOX Board G20 you need:

  • a FOX Board G20
  • a bootable microSD (the distribution used in these tutorials is Linux Debian)
  • a 5 VDC power supply
  • an ethernet link to your LAN
  • a debug port interface (optional)

TIP A starter kit with all you need to get started with the FOX Board G20 is available with code COMBO-2 at the Acme eShop.

Step-by-step guide

Insert the bootable Linux microSD into the socket shown below. If you don't have this microSD please read this article to create one:

  • Plug in the LAN cable
  • Insert the wall adapter to the mains power
  • Plug the power supply connector into the FOX

FOX Board G20 does not have an on-board power switch, so when the power is plugged into the board it turns on immediately and the green led labeled 3V3 will light-up.

Power on led

If you are using the Debug Port Interface, you can see the boot sequence on your terminal emulator.

After a while (about 60 seconds if you are using Debian Linux) the red led PC7 will start to blink.

If you are using OpenWRT this led will not blink

This is the last process launched by Linux when every other process is running and shows that everything is working.

At this point it is possible communicate with the FOX Board using:

  • a Web Browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome to have access to the FOX Board G20 web page
  • a SSH client like putty or ssh to have access to the command line prompt (read Using the SSH session)
  • a SCP client like WinSCP or SCP to move file between your PC and the file systems on the FOX microSD (read Using the SCP session)
  • a Serial Terminal Emulator like telnet, putty or minicom using the serial debug port and the DPI or FOXCONS interfaces
